Here is a recreation I did of the opening scene to part 5 (Missing episode) of 'The power of the daleks.'
I added some post fx to give it that blur look of the old 1960's video/film. The very last part with the daleks going through the door and the conveyor belt, is from the original existing footage.

I have to say, I think they are some of the best animated Daleks I have ever seen, they really give the impression of someone being actually inside them, pulling right, left to move them about. The lighting, rendering and sets look superb.

The only thing I  really recommend is trying to keep to the type/ style of shots that was possible during the 1960's. These sequences were shot on film, so on the whole the cameras wouldn't physically move around, unless  they were on a track, and tend to move as if they were on a tripod. (they were!)

But the shots LOOK fantastic, and everything moves nicely. The only shot I am not so keen on is the Lesterson reaction shot, but you almost get away with it.

Cheers,
Aaron

Ha ha - now THAT's how you do a 60s look. Absolutely perfect 60s style, don't change a thing.

It's actually quite eerie how accurate it all is, how 60s it looks.

The Lesterson shot is pretty awful though - you could get away with it if you didn't move his mouth etc so much!

The "out of phase" blurring is a little much too at times [in fast motion, though in slower motion it really works], and the inserts of the little mutants feel very un-60s.

The Dalek shots though .... terrific work.

[Perhaps to get a better blur look you could "simply" render twice as many frames.]

Very very nice!

I have difficulty distinguishing the original footage from the CGI

- do you use FPrime?

Thanks for all the comments. I take everything on board mentioned. Actually, the blur effect I added in post. It was taking such a long time to render each frame that I cut down on the motion blur and added a post blur effect, this also gave that ghosting effect that is sometimes visible in the old 60's footage.

The Dalek models were originally created by a friend of mine named Billy Bowers. I redone the texturing to the daleks to add a bit more realism.
I agree with the Lesterton footage. I kind of tested out animating his mouth to see how it would look, but overdone it.
The daleks, I always try to get that motion that they achieved in the studio, so I am glad you noticed it in the animation. The set, which is the interior of the dalek ship, I built using images from the original stills over at the BBC website. Its not one hundred percent accurate but its quite difficult sometimes to actually make out what things are from some of the stills.
I hope to do some more work soon on 'Power' as soon as time permits.

Thanks all.

I loved this the first time I saw it Jon, you always manage to make these Daleks look more like the 'real' thing than I ever seem to manage, I hope you do manage to make more of this

Cheers

Hi Billy,
Long time no hear! Wink Glad you liked it. Thanks to your modeling skills of the Daleks in the first place.
Did you ever do any of those cybermen you spoke of?

Wow- fantastic. Amazing. What are you rendering in? Are you adding the 60's video artifacting in post?

I'd love to hear whatever you'd like to share- how did you set up the lights? How long did it take to render? What software are you using? Did you roto the animation from existing Dalek footage? It's so spot on.

Thanks for sharing- a real accomplishment.

Cheers-

This was modeled and rendered in Lightwave 9.6. The 60's effects are added in post. It took around 2 weeks to build the set and render the animation in my spare time. So as we all know, its a very time consuming hobby. Grin
I hope to do some more soon.
