Power of the Daleks was Patrick Troughton's first story as the rejuvenated Doctor, and he underplays his role, letting the audience wonder like Ben and Polly whether this man is really The Doctor as we knew him ...

None of this story survives. It happens to have a fine supporting cast. If we check IMDB and look for the cast's appearances around this time, in shows that have had a good life on video, we get a few leads. In a moment, we'll be following those leads ...

Anneke Wills (Polly) has of course been covered in her own thread.

Robert James, who played Dalek-loving mad scientist Lesterson in The Power of the Daleks, also appeared in The Avengers, five times.

HIs first appearance was in "Hot Snow," the first ever Avengers episode, which is now missing apart from the first act, which survives in great quality. As far as I can tell, you only hear Robert James in the existing footage. He had a much larger part in the next episode, but that episode is missing.

So, let's go on to:
"The Avengers" Death a La Carte - 21 December 1963 (Season 3, Episode 13)

Robert James plays the main villain in this episode (spoiler alert), which involves a Middle Eastern ruler and expensive poisoned food.

This being a season 3 episode with Cathy Gale, this was shot on video and the quality of the episode on the DVD is poor. Still, Robert James gets plenty of good screentime.

Pamela Ann Davy played Janley, assistant to Lesterson, in Power of the Daleks.

Here's Pamela Ann Davy in "The Avengers" - The Living Dead - 22 February 1967 (Season 5, Episode 7)

My copy of this episode isn't very high quality, and Ms. Davy spends much of her screentime being rather odd, so this isn't absolutely the best reference I could have come up with, but it should still be very helpful for this character.

At first seeming quirky and harmless, she turns out to be a baddie under the employ of Julian Glover. I didn't actually watch the episode, but I gathered that much from the visuals.

While doing my research for this thread, I also looked up "The Avengers" Mission to Montreal -  27 October 1962 (Season 2, Episode 5).

Pamela Ann Davy features in this, in a small role, as does Terence Woodfield who played Celation in a few episodes of The Daleks' Master Plan (and was in The Ark).

I believe I saw them both in nice closeups, but to be terribly honest both their roles were small and I couldn't be sure it was them that I was looking at, and not another actor. (They do have distinctive faces, but not THAT distinctive.)

So I didn't bother.

Robert James appears in "The Avengers" Look - (Stop Me If You've Heard This One) But There Were These Two Fellers...  8 May 1968 (Season 7, Episode 11)  ...

.... credited as "Merlin," it's probably a small role and I didn't go looking for it. [I've had a copy on VHS somewhere for 15 years ....]

What I looked up next was ...

Robert James in "The Avengers" - Too Many Christmas Trees - 25 December 1965 (Season 4, Episode 13)

Not a large part - he plays an evil butler called Jenkins. This is a Diana Rigg episode and therefore nicely shot on film. If he has more closeups in this I missed them. The episode is about psychic powers and murder at a Dickensian Christmas party.

Power of the Daleks dates to November-December 1966. Eight years later, his hair having turned grey, Robert James appeared in a popular sitcom ....

Robert James in "Steptoe and Son" - Upstairs, Downstairs, Upstairs, Downstairs -  20 October 1974 (Season 8, Episode 5)

He plays a doctor, advising Harry H. Corbett that Wilfrid Brambell needs to be bedridden, due to his bad back. Predictably, Brambell takes advantage of the situation, to get his son to serve his every whim.

Robert James appears in the beginning of the episode, and is mostly shown reacting to Corbett.
