Well as a bit of a Christmas bonus I thought I'd clear out my hard-drive of all the odds and sods that I started and never finished over the last year or two.  Actually some of this rubish is probably older.  I'm not entirely sure what category this comes under, it's all pretty much abandoned work.

First up, 1 minute from The Moonbase...

Rendered entirely in Anim8or. Keyframing took forever, since each phoneme on the lipsync reqired 3 keys - start (0 value) middle (1 value) and end (0 value again). In fact, the "quick" way to do it was to load up the file in notepad and type out the file code! This one minute took about as long as 10 minutes' worth of the Mission to the Unknown project, and looks just as crap.

More over the next couple of days.

...and now something unique.  Replacement CGI shots that actually manage to be worse than the originals...!

Hey Adam.

Don't be so self deprecating. There is some really nice stuff going on in this material.

I do really like  what you have done with Moonbase. I love that bold simple style the characters have, they allow a multitude of sins. I think all you really need to do it paint the inside of the mouths black, perhaps add some teeth and invest in a touch of eye animation and the style could really work.

However I will say, the reason a lot of the shots don't work is because the characters/ camera moves have very, very hard stops on them. I don't know about animator, but I am sure it must have a graph editor/ spline editor allowing you to remove those hard stops. Especially on characters who will go from moving  to completely still.

I know you're not happy with the clip, but that's a simple little way of giving it just that little bit extra. The likenesses aren't great, but all the characters are so identifiable I think you can get away with it. If you continue with the project, I think it might be worth reworking Polly and making her much thinner, and perhaps give her higher cheekbones.

I hope you do continue with the project, and perhaps try and work on matching the shots to what was shot. If you did continue with it floor plans for the story exist, as do camera scripts. I don't have them, but if you're serious about it I could try to track the material down.

As for the VFX... everyone starts somewhere. Just keep working at it, find out what does and doesn't work. It's the only way to improve. My only real feedback is to watch those "epic shots", moving the camera around like George Lucas shot it. Stylistically things need to fit together.

Having said that, I love the shot with Tom and the TARDIS.

Cheers,
Aaron

Edit. Love the Pertwee walk cycle. I think the whole clip (titles/ driving) could be improved by speeding it up x2. But Having said that it's lovely. Smiley

I enjoyed the keyframing in the Moonbase clip. It reminds me a bit of Aaron's TP4 in terms of design - ugly but recognizable, with some good blocking and movement. Really makes sense of the sequence. Please don't do any more of this, but don't be embarrassed by it either. It's enjoyable for what it is.

But hasn't that ALWAYS been the case?  =)

tygerbug, I think there are quite a number of replacement shots that look perfect. For example Caves of Azdrozani and Revelation of the Daleks.

I think the vast majority of Time Warriors work perfectly too, it's only really the 3D ship and explosion at the end that grate a touch. (Sorry Rob!)

The only problem with that exposion on Time Warrior is that it's badly edited in - he Doctor &co run away from the castle walls, then the camera slowly zooms in on the castle wall, anticipating it exploding.  Then we cut to an altogether different shot for the CGI.  With the original, the splice to the quarry explosion represents the wall behind the Doctor exploding.

hey adam why dont you try using a mix of maybe anim8r and blender

as blender  being opensource and  all   you could  end up with a job with professional studio.

and   blender 2.5   seems to directly  up there with lightwave core which is not even out yet.

so give blender 2.5 a shot

graphicall  has some great expermental builds  wips  ,  daily  svn builds for ubuntu , fedora , windows  and  osx.

interestingly enough someone got it running on a commadore.

also with blender there is aqsis a free high quality open source renderman renderer.
