Daleks' Master Plan - Representatives

Daleks' Master Plan - Representatives

Postby tygerbug » Tue Feb 05, 2008 2:04 am

They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're altogether ooky .... they're the alien representatives from The Daleks' Master Plan. But how much do we REALLY know about this gang of weird-looking evil leaders from the outer galaxies?

Image

There's a lot of photos from Mission to the Unknown which show the aliens looking as they do in that top picture. However, the actors playing those aliens, and even the lineup of the aliens in general, changed when it came time for Dalek's Master Plan. Mission preceded Master Plan by the length of The Myth Makers. Then some of the actors playing the alien delegates changed again after the existing episode "Day of Armageddon."

Andrew Kearley wrote:
"The delegates were played by different actors in Mission than they were in Masterplan - and indeed, the designs changed between the stories (and in some cases between the episodes of Masterplan).

For example, Gearon seems to have changed to this:
Image

And Trantis has changed to this:
Image

There are actually no photos of the delegates from anything other than Mission to the Unknown, as far as I know. There's one of Zephon, with his hood off, hanging with Mavic Chen, but apart from that ....

The Loose Cannon recon, which uses the Mission to the Unknown designs (and artist's representations of Celation and Zephon) was done before the discovery of episode 2, Day of Armageddon, which actually has the delegates in it, looking different than they do in Mission to the Unknown.

So its reconstruction isn't quite accurate.

But no reconstruction could be completely accurate, since in the missing episodes, Celation and Malpha were actually played by different actors. It's arguable that the Loose Cannon version of Celation is actually more accurate, since it's based on screen grabs of the actor Terence Woodfield from how he appears in his other Doctor Who story, The Ark.

The third version of Malpha is played by the well-known actor Bryan Mosely. We have no actual photos of these versions of Celation and Malpha.

I'm very curious how a reconstruction would look today, knowing what we know now. Who are the delegates? What do they REALLY look like?

A glance at the official BBC site for the Daleks' Master Plan episode 2 shows this ....
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ ... heet.shtml

After Mission to the Unknown, Trantis has lost the spines on his face and become Roy Evans.
ImageImage

They refer to him as Trantis, and also identify Celation, Malpha and Zephon in closeups. Trantis seems to have lost his spiny face inbetween Mission to the Unknown and this ...

The Mission to the Unknown versions of the delegates hang out with Verity Lambert on her last ever Doctor Who episode - good pics ...
http://chronovore.org/modules/gallery/i ... mId=120581

Decent shot of Zephon with his hood off can be found here, hanging out with Mavic Chen:
http://chronovore.org/modules/gallery/i ... mId=123122

Alternate source for Mission to the Unknown:
http://drwhotht01.newsit.es/1ta/

So, let's say someone was intending to animate the characters, in CGI or as 2d characters.

What should they REALLY look like? Who is who?

Here's a feature on the making of the Loose Cannon version:
http://www.recons.com/features/lc20x-2.htm

There's also some debate as to what color Mavic Chen was. Some say he was actually blue!

Thanks to Richard Bignell, here's an article by Andrew Pixley:
Image

Is there reference out there from other productions for Bryan Mosley (the third version of Malpha) and Terence Woodfield (the second Celation)?

I see a pic from The Ark of Terence Woodfield here:
http://www.shillpages.com/dw/story-1.shtml

Google Image search turns up some Bryan Mosley from various eras ...
http://images.google.com/images?q=%22br ... art=0&sa=N

I've gone ahead and posted a bunch of screen grabs from Day of Armageddon of the various delegates, as well as some pics of the Loose Cannon Celation.

Anyone needs reference for those characters - enjoy.

Trantis would probably look cool with soem reptile type /cats eyes.  I think with soe good texture work and lighting they can be made to look pretty good.  I may have a try at a couple of them as time allows.

Wayne Wayne Wayne Wayne...

What we would really love from you is a Polly/ Ben / Hensell or any other members of the PotD cast.

BTW, I love Sentreal, I think I might make a spin off show for him..

Oh, that'd be me - I was suggesting to Wayne via private messages that the DMP aliens would look good in his style.  =)

Ah, so many models, so little time ..... much like when I used to hang out at fashion shows .... no wait, that never happened ....

I like Sentreal too. Sad to realize he's not in the Master Plan according to Pixley's best guess. He's in the Loose Cannon recon though, and I think anyone doing Master Plan should throw him in there. Like when they're in the jail ...

True. But then DMP is huuuugge. Its like 6 hours. And so far there has been like 1 minute of footage made in your style.

Hows the EotD project coming along?

Wow. Well, let's not fight in here. To coin a phrase.

I suppose you should tell Monkeytennis that it's pointless to animate Daleks' Master Plan stuff too ... and a user called ColonelBarker for that matter ... wait, that's you.

  ...

If you recall I've actually done some sprites from DMP ... though a bit unfinished.

Ha indeed.

But I was planning on doing Ep1 of DMP until we started on working on PotD.

So they were for something. I should give you my cut down audio for DMP1, it's very good gets the whole thing down to 16 minutes without sounding too cut down or fast.

I listened to it last night.

Courtesy of Frankymole, here are two images from about the same time of Bryan Mosley, who played the third Malpha,

Head on and not looking up would be better, but nice images these.

There's a thread at DWF, the Matrix Data Bank - Classic DW Questions Answered (pt 2) ....

Ssarl writes: There is one colour photo of Mavic Chen, which never really shows up anywhere. I saw it years ago - his skin was sort of golden brown, and his hair was pure white. Only slightly outside the range of a realistic human skin colour; it was clearly meant to be a sort of amalgamation of races. There are numerous colourised pictures of him, thanks to the fad a couple years back. I've even made one! But one of them is real. It also features Trantis, Celation (yellow with brown spots, like a Balletic Space Banana) and the Time Destructor (bright red). Both Chen and Trantis' costumes are blue. I remember it because I had this picture as my wallpaper for ages. Am kicking myself for not having a backup when the computer died!

My notes: This seems like a contradictory posting, and thus possibly a bit suspect .... "I saw it years ago" ..... vs. "I had this picture as my wallpaper for ages. Am kicking myself for not having a backup when the computer died!"

But obviously I'd love to see this photo if it exists. Colour photos from Master Plan aren't completely unknown - there's one of the Daleks with their pyro attachments, against a painted backdrop which like most painted backdrops suddenly looks very fake in colour, where it looked fine in black and white. Funny that.

There's a perception that Mavic Chen is blue, which possibly comes from one of the About Time books .... after believing that for a while I came to see him as probably just a slightly altered flesh tone .... orange or a tan brown. A tan brown would seem the most plausible for an earthling.

Ben Ditoy writes that as far as the Visians go, a sketch by Jan Vincent Rudzki was used as the basis for the Loose Cannon recon. Ian Levine probably drew a sketch as well but this hasn't been leaked.

Cap Monte writes:  The Visians were invisible. I read somewhere, it might have been the John Peel Dalek book, that actors/stuntmen were filmed wriggling in a big sack, and that was the outline we would have seen when they were shot by the Daleks. In the Loose Cannon recon, the CGI used makes them look like mushroom people.

Richard Bignell writes: (There are no photos of the Visians) .... Not as they appeared on screen, but there is at least one behind-the-scenes showing the "man-in-the-sack" used to achieve the effect.

I'd like to see the behind the scenes pics of the prop. There are apparently three of them --

At Roobarb's DVD forum (Custard's Doctor Who forum) ...

TonyMClark writes: There are three photos of a Visian. One in the jungle and another two I think on the same bit of set stumbling off a wooden block (maybe used to give the creature some hieght from the camera view-point).
Like Nation's other invisible creations, the Spiridons, the Visians became visible when they died, so they showed up when being exterminated by the Daleks.

Scooty: Anyone have any idea just where I can find that colour picture of Celation from Masterplan?

Count Orlok writes: There was a further discovery later which showed the Screamers and Celation from The Daleks' Masterplan  IIRC, which completed a pictoral record of every creature seen in the show.

Terry Francis writes: I've never seen a photo of the Screamers. Apart from a really blurred thing in DWM a few years ago, looking a bit like part of a wing attacking a prisoner. Is that the photo you are talking about?

Back at DWF, Ssarl posted some rare images of a Rill model (which I've posted about elsewhere) and color photos of a Fungoid and Mire Beast.

Can't speak for anything else but if the picture you refer to here is this one then it is a mock-up using models and not the real thing.

This rare photo of Celation was posted by Richard Bignell.

Gary Gillatt had posted about it at the RT -- he ran it in an issue of DWM, which is what you see here.

This is Terence Woodfield, who plays Celation in the later episodes of The Daleks' Master Plan - the only known photo of the character, who appears played by another actor in the existing episode 2, briefly.

Loose Cannon based their version of Celation on this photo -- they took grabs of Terence Woodfield in "The Ark," whitened up his face and put him onto a CGI body made in Poser.

The full photo is colour and also shows Mavic Chen (with a brownish makeup on, and apparently no beard?), and Trantis as played by Roy Evans (the actor seen in the existing episode 2 - a different actor, with tentacles on his face, played Trantis in Mission to the Unknown).
The full photo has not been leaked on the internet -- it belongs to a private collector who did provide a low quality to Loose Cannon but requested that it not be leaked further.
